At Worldwide Gin, we have teamed up with a number of carefully selected companies and organisations whose brands and products, we feel, compliment our aim of introducing Gin from around the world to discerning Gin-lovers everywhere, through a variety of insightful articles, blogs and reviews. All are well known and highly respected within the drinks industry, but we appreciate that some will be less well known to many of our readers. With this in mind, we would like to introduce them using their own words taken from their websites. So, without further ado, we present to you...The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (Perhaps, not an obvious choice for a website dedicated to the promotion of Gin...But, it seems, they also know a thing or two about our spirit of choice).
Who They Are
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society is a club unlike any other. As well as being a place to connect with other like-minded whisky lovers, they are also internationally renowned for their mission: to provide their members with an adventurous and fun journey of discovery of the world's widest collection of single cask whiskies.
Their Beginnings
The Society grew out of a few individuals' irrepressible spirit of discovery and adventure, which still drives the Society today. Inspired by the unique character of a single malt whisky cask, purchased over 30 years ago from a Speyside distillery, this pioneering group of friends founded the Society in 1983 to buy more casks and share their discovery with like-minded adventurers.
What They Do
Each of their single cask whiskies must pass the uncompromising noses of their expert Tasting Panel – a secretive group of independent whisky connoisseurs from all walks of life – before being deemed worthy of an iconic Society green bottle. The selection criteria are simple: quality and interest. All the Tasting Panel’s work is performed with no information on age, origin or cask type, to ensure Society whiskies are always bottled when they are ready, whether young or old, Highland or Lowland, sherry casked or ex-bourbon.
Their Whiskies
All of their whiskies are bottled at cask strength and are not subjected to chill filtration or any other interference, so members can enjoy their dram as if it were straight from the cask. The net result is bottlings that often surprise, as well as delight, and which accurately reflect the remarkable variety in the craft of distillation, as well as the infinite complexities of wood, spirit and time, which can only be uncovered in a single cask bottling.
Unique Bottlings
The Society's commitment to taking members on a journey of flavour sensations means that their quest extends to coveted casks from “silent” distilleries that are no longer in operation, giving their adventurous members the opportunity to taste whiskies which may be gone forever.
...But It's Not All About Whisky
Whilst single-minded in their pursuit of the best single cask whisky, the Society has been inspired by that quest to seek out the best single cask spirits from the non-whisky world as well. Their passion to seek out the finer things in life has led to their Single Cask Spirits collection, the result of a collaboration between the most creative and skilled distillers, a carefully selected team of category ambassadors who are experts in their fields, and their own Tasting Panel – which is always the final voice when it comes to assessing and approving a bottle to ensure quality. Ultimately, they are putting the same level of dedication into sourcing each of their Single Cask Spirits bottlings as they do with their whiskies, to provide the drinker with an exceptional experience...Welcome to a whole new world of single cask flavour.
