Greenall's Wild Berry Gin: Berry, Berry Nice...But Partner With Care

As an increasing number of people are sampling the delights of the ever growing numbers of artisanal Gins being introduced to the market, the Gin world is beginning to succumb to a certain amount of Gin snobbery. By this, we mean that there is, in some circles, a train of thought which dictates that, if a bottle of Gin costs less than £30.00, it simply can't compete with the very best, and if it costs less than £20.00 it belongs to the realm of drinks that are best suited to ageing grandmothers and maiden aunts rather than the new generation of botanical savvy Gin lovers. Whilst there is, generally, something to be said for the old adage "you get what you pay for", there are a number of notable exceptions in the Gin world, and Greenall's Wild Berry Gin may well prove another case in point.

Released in 2014, Greenall's Wild Berry Gin was the first new Gin style created by G & J Greenall in over 250 years, but priced at less than £20.00, and often found for less than £15.00, can it really be any good, and can it compete with pricier craft Gins, or is this just another flavoured Vodka?

On the Nose

Juniper definitely comes to the fore, but the luscious aromas of both blackberry and raspberry, somewhat reminiscent of a jam making session from our childhood, are allowed to shine through.

Tasting Notes

Tasted neat, the initial Juniper carries through onto the palate, with raspberry following and blackberry not far behind. Once both berries come through, they seem perfectly balanced without one trying to outshine the other. Enter a little warming spice, with cracked black pepper coming into play, and this helps to add an overall smoothness. The finish is one of lingering berry deliciousness with a pine and a peppery warmth, which combine to create a rather pleasant aftertaste.

Perfect Serve

This is where things get interesting, because the choice of mixer really can make or break this Gin. Paired with Fever-Tree Premium Indian Tonic Water, with blackberries and raspberries for garnish, the Gin simply failed to live up to our expectations based on the neat tasting. Switch things up a little with Lamb & Watt Hibiscus Tonic Water, again with blackberries and raspberries to accentuate the berry flavours within the Gin, and the drink really sparkles. In fact the slightly tart, berry-rich, flavours of the mixer completely transform the Gin which, almost literally, becomes Heaven in a glass. Absolutely superb.

Conclusion

This is a Gin that can certainly be enjoyed on its own, or with nothing other than ice. It works in a G&T, but needs to be paired with care. With Lamb & Watt Hibiscus Tonic Water, garnished with berries, it is, simply, sublime...And we can imagine this working rather well in a number of more complex 'Berry Cocktails'.
