Great German Gins: Part 1

Beer, bread, cars...And the less said about football, the better. It seems that, whatever the Germans do, they do rather well...But what about their Gin?
Think of Germany...Now think of drinks most associated with the country. Chances are, you’re thinking of Beer, Riesling, Schnapps...But what about Gin? Well, despite a long history of Gin production, along with a variety of other juniper-flavoured spirits, such drinks had, largely, been replaced by Vodka as Germany’s spirit of choice by the mid-twentieth century. But, it seems that, over the past decade, the Germans have joined the worldwide Gin party in a big way.

British Gins, such as Gordon’s and Bombay Sapphire, are the country’s dominant brands, but a number of artisanal, small-batch, Gins of German production are rapidly gaining popularity with the nation’s drinkers and are fuelling the country’s rapidly growing craft cocktail scene. So, let’s kick off with a couple of our favourites, of the country’s up-and-coming Gins, that are starting to gain in popularity here in the UK.

German Monkey 47 Schwarzwald Dry Gin

Monkey 47: Chances are, if you’ve only tried one German Gin, it’ll be Monkey 47; the ‘47’ in the name highlighting the incredible number of botanicals that go into producing this unusual Gin from Germany’s Black Forest region, whilst also giving a nod to the fact that the Gin is bottled at 47% Alc/Vol. Although you’d be hard pressed to identify all forty-seven botanicals, or even more than a handful of them, clearly they all bring something to this incredibly complex, multi-award winning, premium Gin.

German Elephant London Dry Gin

Elephant Gin: Another multi-award winning premium Gin, rapidly gaining popularity in Germany, is the superb, and personally recommended by Worldwide Gin, Elephant Gin. Made using fourteen botanicals, including some rather unusual native African species, Elephant is a complex, but surprisingly smooth, Gin. Inspired by South Africa’s traditional ‘sundowner’ drinks, used to relax after a day in the bush, Elephant also seeks to give something back to the continent that inspired its founders, with 15% of all proceeds supporting Big Life Foundation’s Rangers Club and Space For Elephants Foundation.
